Bahamas on the Beaches

Set high on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, Bahamas on the Beaches is a family home shaped by colour, collaboration and considered detail. Designed and built by MILEHAM Architects + Builders, the project brings together architecture, materiality and hardware in a way that feels resolved, personal and deeply lived in.

James Pilcher, architect and builder at MILEHAM Architects + Builders, led the architectural direction of the home, while Alice Pilcher, Head of Operations and Marketing, contributed as both collaborator and homeowner. Together, the project was approached with a focus on longevity, allowing spatial flow, material selection and detailing to be considered from the very beginning. Rather than relying on excess, the home draws strength from proportion, texture and rhythm. Each space carries its own identity, yet the overall language remains cohesive. Hardware was selected as part of this process, integrated into joinery, cabinetry and architectural elements so it could support the design rather than sit apart from it.

Spaces with Detailed Personality

Throughout the home, finishes shift in response to each room. Bronze, brushed satin brass and dark brushed brass are used with quiet intention, allowing each handle selection to sit naturally within its own palette while maintaining a consistent thread across the home.

In the kitchen, the palette centres on a colour chosen as a considered midpoint between green and blue. Carrara marble brings a soft grey tone, while black frames and pendants add contrast and definition. An aged antique mirrored splashback introduces warmth, balancing the stronger elements within the room. Against this layered palette, the Bellevue lined range in bronze and the Arpa range in antique brass adds structure through its fine vertical detailing. Used across drawers and pantry joinery, these selections reinforce the geometry of the space while adding subtle texture.

The Bahamas study carries a richer, more expressive tone. Deep blues are paired with golden notes, creating a space designed for focus, creativity and retreat. As a room used by James and Alice, the palette reflects the need for a creative space to work within. The Barrington handle range in brushed satin brass sits comfortably in this setting, bringing weight and tactility while supporting the warmth of the surrounding materials.

In the primary lounge, the New Hampton round knob in bronze introduces a softer note. Its form feels quietly traditional, sitting within the broader material language of the home without interrupting the overall composition. The master walk-in robe takes on a more restrained expression bringing in a refreshing brightness thanks to the flooding light pooling through the french doors which line the rear of the home.

Here, the Bellevue plain range in dark brushed brass adds depth and refinement, allowing the space to feel calm, grounded and cohesive. Across the internal doors, Bellevue lined levers in bronze create a consistent architectural thread. Their repetition helps connect each room, allowing the home to move from one space to the next with a sense of continuity.

A Home for the Whole Family

Colour is used throughout the home with a strong personal connection. The exterior is finished in a soft pink, referencing a shared familiarity from James and Alice’s childhood homes and setting the tone for a house that feels both designed and deeply personal. That sense of individuality continues in the children’s spaces. Alice and James allowed their children to select the colours for their own rooms, resulting in blue and yellow bedrooms, along with a pink bathroom. These choices bring a sense of joy and personality to the family home, which MILEHAM Architects + Builders have expertly defined to sit comfortably within the broader design.

Across each of the children’s bedrooms, the Lucca range in brushed satin brass introduces a subtle sense of character through its stepped detailing. The hardware supports daily use while complementing the more expressive palette, allowing the children’s rooms to feel playful without feeling separate from the rest of the home. Bahamas on the Beaches reflects a consistent approach to design, where architecture, interiors and detail are resolved together. Each material choice, colour selection and hardware detail has been considered in relation to the next, resulting in a home that feels clear in its intent while remaining adaptable to everyday family life.
