Set within a beautifully preserved Victorian home, Cowper Residence by Studio Noakes is a thoughtful reinterpretation of heritage architecture, balancing traditional character with the needs of contemporary family life. At the centre of the renovation is a refined kitchen transformation designed to support the rhythm of everyday living while maintaining the home’s original charm.
The Growing Family Brief
Working alongside an architect, the broader renovation introduced an upper-level extension to accommodate the family’s growing needs, creating a new bedroom and bathroom wing for their daughters. Within the existing footprint, Studio Noakes focused on reworking the kitchen layout, reclaiming underutilised areas and improving circulation to create a space that feels both generous and highly functional.
The Heart of the Home
A calm considered aesthetic was central to the design approach. As passionate art collectors, the homeowners wanted the kitchen to remain visually restrained so that adjoining living areas could showcase their artwork without distraction. The result is a refined interpretation of the traditional hand-painted kitchen, where classic detailing has been softened to create a lighter, more contemporary feel.
Materiality plays an important role in elevating the space. Arabescato Corchia marble forms both the benchtop and splashback, bringing subtle drama through its refined veining, while bespoke hand-painted cabinetry in Porters Paints White Pepper introduces warmth and softness. Complementing the joinery, Momo Handles’ Belgravia Range in Dark Brushed Brass adds depth and tactility, grounding the palette with a quiet moment of contrast.
Traditional craftsmanship remains evident throughout the detailing. Bolection moulding was applied to the cabinetry before painting, while American oak interiors within the pantry introduce natural texture and warmth. Integrated Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, along with concealed breakfast zones and carefully considered storage, allow the joinery to read more like furniture than conventional kitchen cabinetry.
The result is a kitchen that feels both elegant and hardworking, a space designed to support daily family life while honouring the home’s Victorian heritage. Together with new joinery in the living and dining areas and the addition of the upstairs wing, the renovation represents a cohesive transformation that thoughtfully adapts a historic home for modern living.
